Now, I'm 18 and just starting out as a music producer, engineer, writer and artist, so I don't have years on this but...
The reason why real artists aren't mainstream, is because the music industry saw hip hop as an amazing breakthrough in music. And after content became more controlled, It was easier to keep the people(Most importantly those of Afro-Asiatic decent)under a continuous state of ignorance, and negativity. Which is why gang rap was promoted to the level we see today.

After all, what better way to keep people mentally weak, poisoned, ignorant and dead, then to control what they hear, see, what is accepted, and what isn't.
Words and Music are the most powerful and influential tools on this planet. Music moves past the body, and into the soul. Depending on the message, it can kill, or lift up a person, because music is as potent as poison, and a lot more addictive than crack is. Only problem is, mostly everyone listens to rap today.
